me

I graduated from the University of Oxford in July 2020 with a 1st class degree in Engineering Science. I took my A-Levels in 2015 at Highgate School in Maths, Further Maths, Physics and History achieving an A* in each. I love working with young people and have a long history of doing so; as a leader on summer camps, as a full-time teaching assistant and in other outreach programmes. For more information about what I am currently up to, please see the about page (please note, to return to this page from other parts of the site, you need to paste jacobhgreen.com/tutoring into your browser).

experience

I have over 300 hours of private tutoring experience and have also volunteered for various access tutoring programmes such as Schools Plus and Engineers without Borders Oxford. Between school and university, I spent 6 months working as a full-time teaching assistant for Maths and Physics up to A-Level as well as Science up to GCSE in my role as a Chrysalis Fellow for Highgate School. This involved working in many partner schools across London, both with the highest achieving students and those that needed a boost with the basics.

Until the current lockdown is lifted, all tutoring will be carried out by video call using a virtual shared whiteboard. Afterwards, I also hope to offer in-person tuition in a socially distanced way.

ethos

Learning Maths and Science at school can be hard, especially if students don't feel as if these subjects come naturally to them and don't understand why they are vital skills to learn. When teaching, I emphasise the importance of practice and learning by doing. Using careful questions when a student gets stuck, we work through problems together so that when they have finished, they don't just understand how to do such a question, but why we do it that way. As an Engineer, I also throw in real life examples of problems that could be solved using the methods that we are currently studying, to demonstrate why it can be useful as well as fascinating.

For the highest achieving students, my approach is much the same except that we go beyond the standard problems they might tackle at school. This may involve deriving methods and rules from scratch or applying their knowledge to higher level problems. This enables them to gain a deeper understanding of the fundamental principles that will help them in their exams, in applying to University and beyond.

For all students, we cover exam technique as a part of every session.

subjects

Here you can find a list of subjects and the levels to which I am available for tutoring:

Maths & Further Maths - A2/University Entry

Physics - A2/University Entry

Chemistry/Biology - Year 9

Introductory computer programming

oxbridge entry

In preparation for Oxbridge interviews, I also offer dedicated sessions in mathematical problem solving for those applying to Oxford and Cambridge for Engineering and Physics. Having gone through the process myself, spoken with admissions tutors and with a good understanding of the necessary skills to succeed, I design these sessions to expose candidates to a wide variety of potential interview questions as well as improve on general interview technique. Mock interviews with full written feedback are also available.

introductory computer coding

Computer coding is a fun and highly useful skill that is best to learn when you are young. For children keen to enter the world of coding but unsure where to start, I offer introductory and beginner sessions in Python and JavaScript. These languages are easy to learn and widely in demand in industry. We cover the basics first, followed by mini-projects in visualising the maths that they have been studying at school. For those interested, we will also write a small game that can be published to the web for others to play.
